Title: Thanks
Rating: PG
Character(s): Stephen Cornfoot
Prompt: #14 - Goodbyes
Word Count: 336
Notes: Post Hogwarts. Mid-war. About 3 years after graduation.

No matter what people say, it will always be one of the hardest things he ever had to do. Sure. He could probably tell them jokes to lighten up the atmosphere but he couldn’t find anything funny about the whole situation. Perhaps he should have just abandoned the thing altogether.

But he can’t. He had to be there. If there was one thing that Stephen was, it was that he was loyal and dependable. And he can’t just abandon his friend like that. It was the least he could do. It was the last thing he could… and would do for him.

Taking a deep breath, he got up and walked towards the platform before stopping behind the podium.

“Kevin is one of the persons that I could say who knew me well. He knew the moment I started to like girls,” a few laughter, “He knew the moment I was going behind his back to catch a few moments with my girl. He accused me of two-timing him!” Another bout of soft laughter and he even grinned wryly himself. “But what I liked best about him was that he knew me. How to cheer me up. How to get through me. How…” He paused. He was finding it harder to breath.

“He knew that I’d stop him if he told me that he had to go on a mission alone. He knew I’d insist to go with him that’s why he didn’t…” His voice hitched and he had to stop speaking before he’d completely break down.

Taking a deep breath, he smiled sadly at the people gathered before him. “Kevin Enwhistle was a fighter who believed that what he was fighting for was what was right. He was the silent support that we all needed during the times we were losing hope.” A pause. “But most of all… He was a friend. A brother. And a son.”

His eyes sought out his friend’s family and gathered courage from their smiles. “Kevin… Wherever you are… Cheers.”
